Proximity (RFID) Cards

Proximity cards are contactless smart cards that operate using 125 kHz RFID technology. They are widely used in personnel tracking, door access control, and security systems.

How Do Proximity Cards Work?

Proximity cards contain a small chip and antenna. When the card comes within range of a reader (typically 2-10 cm), the reader emits radio waves that power the cards chip. The chip then transmits its unique ID number back to the reader for authentication.

Types of RFID Cards

  • 125 kHz Proximity Cards: Basic, cost-effective, read-only
  • 13.56 MHz Mifare Cards: Higher security, read/write capability
  • HID iCLASS: Enterprise-grade security, encryption support
  • UHF RFID: Long-range (up to 10m), for vehicle tracking

Use Cases

  • PDKS (Personnel Attendance Control): Employee time tracking
  • Door Access Control: Secure entry to buildings and rooms
  • Turnstile Systems: Integration with physical barriers
  • Cafeteria Systems: Meal access and tracking
  • Parking Systems: Vehicle access management

Proximity vs Mifare Comparison

Proximity (125 kHz): Lower cost, shorter range, basic security - ideal for small businesses.

Mifare (13.56 MHz): Higher security with encryption, data storage, multi-application - recommended for enterprise use.
